‘Bieber fever’ breaks out wherever Justin Bieber appears. Concerts are sold out in no time at all and thousands of hysterical girls utterly worship him. His success seems to have come from nowhere, but not to Justin. He already started drumming at the tender age of two. He subsequently taught himself to play the guitar, piano and trumpet.
A twelve year old Justin put films of himself participating with a local singing competition on YouTube in 2007. They were intended for family and friends, but were also noticed by the American rapper and producer Usher. Bieber released his first CD, entitled My World, under Usher’s label in 2009. His debut single One Time instantly turned platinum. Baby (together with rapper/actor Ludacris) from his My World 2.0 album achieved even better results. The single came in at number 5 in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and became an international hit.
Social media continues to be of importance to his career. Justin has over 22 million friends on Facebook. He also has an amazing number of followers on Twitter. The direct contact with his fans, who call themselves ‘Beliebers’, has certainly contributed to his success. But the downside is that everything he says and does is magnified. The decision to cut his famous hairstyle in 2011 cost him 80.000 followers on Twitter! However, on the positive side, a lock of his hair will fetch 40.668 dollars at a charity auction.
