As a pro-democracy campaigner and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention since 1989, most of it under house arrest in Rangoon
In 2006, a movement called the 88 Generation Students Group launched their White Expression Campaign in support of political prisoners that were being detained by the Burmese military junta. A member of this group and a political prisoner herself, Aung San Suu Kyi carries a white handkerchief in her right hand in solidarity with their cause
She was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 1991 “for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights” in Burma
