Teresa Teng became a hugely influential singer throughout East Asia and is said to be the most popular female singer ever in Chinese communities around the world
Political tension between mainland China and Taiwan led to her music being banned in China for several years in the early 1980s, along with other singers from Taiwan and Hong Kong
Teresa became known as “the soldier’s sweetheart”, by entertaining troops with her renditions of love songs in Mandarin. She also sang in Cantonese, Japanese, Taiwanese and English. She died suddenly from a respiratory attack at the age of 42
