Choose Your Sporting Hero! Search for New Wax Figure
Following the amazing success of London 2012, and ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow, Madame Tussauds in Blackpool is asking the nation to choose its next sporting hero to be immortalised in wax.
A shortlist of five names has been chosen by visitors to the famous seaside attraction and now it’s down to the public to vote.
The chosen five sporting heroes are:
- Mo Farrah CBE, Runner
- Ellie Simmonds, OBE, Swimmer
- Jonnie Peacock, MBE, Sprint Runner
- Beth Tweddle MBE, Gymnast
- Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, Sailor
Matthew Titherington, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Blackpool, said: “Britain is a great sporting nation with some incredible athletes and we’d love to honour them all but only one can be chosen and we need the public’s help to decide who that should be.”
The winning athlete will then be invited to a sitting at the Madame Tussauds Studio, where more than 200 measurements will be taken before their head is made in clay and then created in wax using a cast, before individual hairs will be inserted by hand in our, which can number as many as 10,000, directly onto the head.
Once created the new wax figure will join a very select group of sports stars to be created in wax, including Tom Daley, Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton, Jessica Ennis, Usain Bolt and Rafael Nadal.
The wax figure will take four months and £150,000 to create, before being placed in the popular family attraction, joining other British favourites such as Susan Boyle, Gok Wan, Keith Lemon and Sir Bruce Forysth.
