Nelson Mandela
After years of imprisonment under the South African government’s apartheid system, Mandela finally became the first black President of the Republic of South Africa in 1994. In 1964 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for political crimes but was released in 1990 to become President of the ANC. In 1993 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with president F W de Klerk for their joint efforts to establish harmony in South Africa. After his retirement as President in 1999, he committed himself to fighting AIDS.
