Teresa Teng

Teresa Teng was a Taiwanese-born singer who charmed Chinese communities worldwide with her classic folk songs and romantic ballads. Her popularity became so immense that people would say, “By day, Deng Xiao-ping rules, but by night, Teresa Teng rules.” In 1980, Teresa won Taiwan's top award, the Golden Bell award for best female singer and was selected as one of the nation’s Ten Most Outstanding Young Women. As the child of a military family, Teresa often returned to Taiwan to put on performances for the troops, and became known as the “soldiers’ sweetheart”. Teresa died of an asthma attack in Thailand at the age of 42.
