Leslie Cheung
Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing was one of Asia’s most acclaimed entertainers. He was an outstanding actor who made 56 films and released 88 albums in a career spanning 26 years. In 1977, he was first runner-up in an amateur singing contest, which launched his career in the entertainment industry. He spent much of his time laying the foundation of a singing career and in 1983 released his first hit album, The Wind Blows On. In 1986, Leslie rose to superstardom on the big screen when he starred in John Woo’s gangster movie A Better Tomorrow.
Internationally, Leslie was best known for his compelling role in Chen Kaige’s Farewell To My Concubine (1993), a powerful film that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar nomination. In 1994, this movie won the Best Foreign Movie Award of the Japan Film Critics Association and Leslie won the Best Actor Award in the foreign language category. Tragically, Leslie died in Hong Kong, aged 46, on 1 April 2003. After his death, he was voted one of the Ten Cultural Icons of the twentieth century by Mainland China.
