Mahatma Gandhi

The famous Indian freedom fighter, who advocated independence through passive resistance. Born in India he studied law in London before practising in Bombay.

In 1893 he moved to South Africa spending 21 years there opposing discrimination against Indians. He moved back to India in 1914 and became active in the struggle for Home Rule. He spent much of his life in prison until he negotiated Indian independence from Britain in 1946/7. He was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in 1948.
