Dr Sun Yat Sen is popularly referred to as the father of modern China. He played an instrumental role in the eventual overthrow of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, acting as the first provisional president when the Republic of China was consequently founded the following year. He later co-founded the Kuomintang, serving as its first leader. His political life was one of constant struggle, but he has left a chief legacy: a political philosophy known as The Three Principles of the People, which still influences government today.
