Meet Australia's Grand Slam Champion

Rodney George ‘Rod’ Laver is a former tennis player who held the world No.1 spot for seven consecutive years from 1964 to 1970.

He was born Rodney George Laver on 9th August 1938 in Rockhampton, QLD, Australia.

Rod started young, leaving school to become a professional tennis player and becoming junior champion in both Australia and America in 1957.

He was an outstanding player, developing topspin into a lethal weapon. He was left-handed and had an incredibly strong left forearm and wrist.

Rod twice achieved the Grand Slam (winning all four major tournaments in the same year), as an amateur in 1962, and as a professional in 1969.

In 1971 he became the first professional tennis player to surpass the US $1 million mark in career prize money.
