Layne Beachley is a former professional surfer who won the World Championships seven times. She was brought up in the competitive Manly surf-scene, and by the age of 15 was competing in and winning men’s heats.
1972: Layne Beachley was born Tania Maris Gardner on 24 May 1972 in Sydney, Australia. Layne’s mother was very young when she had her daughter, so Layne was adopted by Neil and Valerie Beachley who lived in nearby Manly and her name was changed to Layne Collette Beachley.
1978: Her adoptive mum suffered a post-operative brain hemorrhage and died so she was raised by a family friend
1998: Layne became the women’s ASP World Champion and retained the title for six years, and then won it again in 2006
1999: Layne met her biological mother for the first time
2002 - 2008: She has appeared in numerous surfing films including Blue Crush, Step Into Liquid, and Newcastle
2010: She married Kirk Pengilly, a member of rock band INXS
2012: Layne’s Madame Tussauds wax figure was sculpted from a sitting on 31st March 2011. The clothing and surfboard were donated by Layne Beachley.
