A number one overall draft pick, Ovechkin immediately captured the hearts of Capitals fans during the 2005-2006 season and secured the Calder Memorial Trophy (rookie of the year).

During the 2007-2008 NHL season, The Russian Machine, as he's also known, became the first player to win all four outstanding player awards in one season: the Rocket Richard Trophy (leading goal scorer), the Art Ross Trophy (league points leader), the Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player), and the Hart Memorial Trophy (league MVP).
