Johann 'Hans' Krankl is considered by many to be Austria's greatest ever football player. He is associated mainly with Rapid Wien, who he played several seasons with before and after a stint for Barcelona.
Krankl achieved legendary status after scoring for Austria in the 88th minute of a 1978 World Cup game against West Germany. The Austrians won 3:2, their first victory against the West Germans for 47 years. One excited commentator exclaimed
”Goal goal goal goal goal goal, I'm going crazy!”
After he retired from the pitch in 1989, Krankl worked as a manager and coach.
He also enjoyed success with his music – most prominently with his single “Lonely Boy”, which reached number two in the Austrian charts in 1985.
Born Johann Krankl on 14th February 1953 in Vienna, Austria.
