Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth

“Babe” Ruth, also known as the "Great Bambino," was a homerun-hitting New York Yankee's baseball player and one of the greatest players of all time.

Famous Facts

  • He was born George Herman Ruth on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his nickname when he signed by Jack Dunn of the Baltimore Orioles at age 19. Other players called him "Jack's new babe" and the name stuck.
  • In 1919, the Red Sox sold Babe to the Yankees for $125,000. While the Yankees went on to win multiple World Series titles, the Red Sox didn't win again until 2004. This losing streak was attributed to the "Curse of the Bambino."
  • Babe hit 54 homeruns in his first season with the Yankees. As a result, game attendance doubled. This allowed the Yankees to build a new stadium nicknamed "The House that Ruth Built."
