Patrick Swayze Honored
Patrick Swayze, celebrated actor and dancer best known for his roles in Dirty Dancing, Ghost, and Point Break, was honored with a new wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hollywood. The actor, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer two years ago, was immortalized in a new wax figure as his character, Johnny Castle, from Dirty Dancing.
First released in 1987, Dirty Dancing is the story of a naïve girl who meets an experienced dance instructor and becomes his pupil in dance and love. Patrick Swayze continues to captivate the hearts and minds of generations of fans as Dirty Dancing remains one of the most popular films in Lionsgate’s library, and is one of the most enduring modern classics in feature film and home entertainment history. The film continues to captivate new generations of fans who weren’t even born when the original film was released in 1987.
Lionsgate is constantly developing new ways to satiate the hunger of the Dirty Dancing fans using Patrick’s character of Johnny Castle, and Jennifer Grey’s Baby in everything from a social media game, licensed products, special edition DVDs and Blu-rays and a live stage show. Dirty Dancing is also a Facebook sensation, with almost 11 million fans and ranked as one of the top 10 most “liked” entertainment franchises ahead of more current phenomena such as The Dark Knight. Lionsgate also recently announced that it will make a new Dirty Dancing feature film for release in 2013, directed by Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of the original Dirty Dancing movie and director of High School Musical.
"Patrick Swayze touched so many of us in his too-short life – embodying quintessential teenage angst and steadfast love in Dirty Dancing, a generation of us grew up with Patrick Swayze," said Colin Thomas, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hollywood. "We are extremely pleased to be able to pay tribute to him in our attraction."
“This tribute is truly an honor to Patrick’s memory and his iconic portrayal of Johnny Castle,” said Anne Parducci, Lionsgate’s Executive Vice President, Family & Home Entertainment Marketing. “Fans of all ages will have the chance to relive the magic of Dirty Dancing for years to come with this exhibit."
Swayze’s figure will join the ranks of such Hollywood icons as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, as well as Hollywood’s latest big stars including Lady Gaga, Jennifer Aniston and Will Smith.
