Who Are the Avengers?

The Marvel Avengers are a team of costumed crimefighters whose goal is to safeguard the world from any danger that outpaces the ability of human peacekeeping forces. The Avengers was the first team to receive total government sanctions by the U.S National Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly, and eventually by the U.N-sanctioned international agency called the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.)

The Avengers initiative was all thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. He pitched it to Tony Stark and Steve Rogers following Phil Coulson’s death, Stark’s defeat of Obadiah Stane, and the revelation that he was the Iron Man. In the comics, the Avengers make their first appearance in Avengers (1963) #1. In movies, they band together in the first Avenger movie of 2012.

So how many Avengers are there? Before we answer this question, you must remember that not all members present in the comics have appeared in the film and T.V. show adaptations. Also, note that some are honorary members who typically join for a short period to help fight particular battles. Again, due to the dissolution of Avengers throughout history, some join to fill gaps.

There are at least 100 Avengers in the comics and the entire Marvel universe to answer your question. However, only about six are present at a time.

Who Are the Original Avengers?

Initially, Nick Fury wanted to call the Avengers the Protectors Initiative. The original Avengers team comprised of:

  • Iron Man (Inventor)—Tony Stark
  • Hawkeye (Marksman, Archer)—Clinton Barton
  • Thor Odinson (Asgardian God of Thunder)
  • Captain America (First Avenger)—Steven Grant Rogers
  • Immortal Hulk (Theoretical Physicist)—Bruce Banner
  • Black Widow (Russian Spy & Assassin) a.k.a Natasha Romanoff

How Did the Avengers Form?

Just before Phil Coulson, the previous S.H.I.E.L.D.Director dies, he and Nick Fury have a conversation about the increasing intergalactic threats and how Captain Marvel wouldn’t be able to handle them alone(Captain Marvel film). After Phil Coulson dies, Nick Fury approaches Iron Man and Captain America with the idea of forming the Avengers.

Are Avengers Superheroes?

Yes, the Avengers are a team of superheroes who strive to protect the world from intergalactic threats. You’ve probably seen superheroes like Iron Man and Captain America on the cinematic screen. The Avengers’ superheroes include others like Ares, Sentry, and Spider-Woman in the comics.

Who Is Part of the Avengers?

Iron Man

Iron Man

Considered the most popular Avenger, Tony Stark is a genius and avid inventor who inherits Stark industries after his parents die. His story begins when a trip overseas to consult on a weapons contract goes awry. An explosion leaves him with shrapnel a few inches from his heart.

He also ends up a captive of a warlord who forces him to create weapons. While here, he teams up with another prisoner, engineer Yinsen to build an iron suit that would keep him alive and escape. He succeeds and goes back to the U.S., his home, and later becomes Iron Man. As a genius, Tony Stark is always tweaking his Iron Man suit in his lab. Captain America

During WWII, Steve Rogers tried to enlist in the U.S. army. However, he failed the tests partly due to his skinny nature. Sergeant Dugan enrolled him in “Rebirth,” a top-secret military operation. Once injected with the super-serum, he became the first genetically modified super soldier and eventually Captain America, the country’s top weapon.

In 1945, he led a mission in an Icelandic base and unfortunately fell into the Arctic Ocean, which left him in suspended animation. He was discovered decades later and joined the Avengers.

Loki

Loki

Even though he is not an Avenger, Loki is a critical member of the Marvel universe for several reasons. First, he is the stepbrother to one of the original Avengers, Thor Odinson. After joining the Odin family, Loki noticed the close relationship between Odin and Thor, which sparked hatred and jealousy. Thor’s heroic traits heightened his envy. Not long after, he began plotting how to become the Asgardian ruler and enslave planet earth. His actions are part of why there is an Avengers initiative.

As a God of Mischief and Sorcerer, his powers and abilities include:

  • Superhuman strength
  • Interdimensional travel
  • Extended lifespan
  • Flight
  • Astral projection
  • Telepathy

Thor

Thor, the God of Thunder, is the son of Odin, the Asgardian ruler and the earth Goddess Gaea. During his youth, he would participate in challenging missions. As a result, he became worthy of Mjolnir, the Uru hammer. When his stepbrother Loki deceived him on earth, Thor teamed up with Iron Man and other formidable superheroes to form the Avengers.

Powers and abilities

  • Warrior’s madness
  • Superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes
  • Master fighter
  • He has excellent sword-fighting skills
  • Can wield Mjolnir to control weather elements like thunder and can open interdimensional entryways

Nothing can stop you once you have the Mjölnir in your hand. Influence the environment and enjoy the experience at Madame Tussauds Amsterdam. Feel the earth move and if you are feeling a little daring, set the trees on fire!

Hulk Set

Hulk

Bruce Banner studied nuclear physics. There was a sharp rise in mutants during this time, and he believed radiation to be behind this mutation. He later started working at a nuclear research facility, and his main goal was to produce a super-army.

With little success, he decided to take shortcuts and dosed himself with a Gamma radiation serum turning him into The Hulk. While he harmed people during his transformation, he eventually joined the Avengers to help protect the earth from otherworldly threats.

Powers and abilities

  • Superhuman strength and healing
  • His power increases the angrier he gets
  • His human form has a genius intellect
