What Is Ebenezer About?

Ebenezer is a 2026 dark fantasy adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a wealthy and miserly businessman whose outlook on life is challenged by supernatural encounters during the Christmas season.

In Dickens’ original story, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Through these encounters, Scrooge revisits defining moments in his life, sees the consequences of his behavior, and faces the future that may await him if he refuses to change.

The new film takes this familiar premise in a darker fantasy direction. Its official synopsis describes a supernatural journey through Scrooge’s past, present, and future as he fights for a second chance.

The result is a new interpretation of a story that has inspired countless stage productions, films, television specials, and other adaptations. Rather than simply repeating earlier versions, Ebenezer offers audiences a fresh take on Dickens’ enduring themes of regret, compassion, and redemption.

Who Plays Ebenezer Scrooge in the 2026 Movie?

The film's darker fantasy approach provides a new setting for Depp's interpretation of the character. Audiences can see the film's official trailer and details through the Paramount Pictures Ebenezer movie page.

How Is Ebenezer Different From Other Versions of A Christmas Carol?

The central story of A Christmas Carol is familiar to generations of readers and moviegoers, but adaptations can vary significantly in tone, setting, and interpretation.

Dickens’ original novella follows Scrooge as he encounters supernatural visitors who reveal how his past experiences, present behavior, and possible future are connected. The story ultimately asks whether someone who has become isolated and unkind can recognize the harm they have caused and choose a different path.

Ebenezer approaches that premise as a dark fantasy and supernatural story. Directed by Ti West, the film brings a different atmosphere to the traditional Christmas narrative.

Key elements that connect the film to Dickens’ story include:

• Ebenezer Scrooge: The central figure whose transformation drives the narrative.

• Jacob Marley: The ghost whose warning introduces Scrooge to the supernatural journey ahead.

• The Christmas spirits: Figures that force Scrooge to confront different aspects of his life.

• Redemption: The possibility that Scrooge can change before it is too late.

The new adaptation retains the recognizable foundation of Dickens’ story while presenting it through a different cinematic lens. Viewers familiar with earlier versions can compare its interpretation with the book, classic films, and other adaptations.

Why Is Ebenezer Scrooge Such an Iconic Christmas Character?

Ebenezer Scrooge remains one of the most recognizable characters associated with Christmas because his story combines supernatural mystery with a universal question: Can people change?

When Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843, he introduced a character whose wealth could not protect him from loneliness or the consequences of his choices. Scrooge's transformation from a miser into a more compassionate person became the emotional center of the story.

The character's name has since become shorthand for someone who is ungenerous or dismissive of the holiday spirit. Yet Scrooge is more than a familiar symbol of Christmas grumpiness. His story is also about the influence of memory, the importance of human connection, and the opportunity to make better choices.

That combination helps explain why filmmakers continue to revisit the character. Every new adaptation can emphasize different aspects of Scrooge, from his isolation and fear to the supernatural encounters that challenge his outlook.

With Johnny Depp playing the title character in Ebenezer, the 2026 film brings a new interpretation to a role that has remained part of Christmas culture for generations.
