Learn more about Messi's career
- Messi was born as son of Jorge Horácio Messi and Celia María Cuccittini in Rosario, Santa Fe Province. Lionel has two older brothers and began playing football at the age of five - in a local football club, which was trained by his father. Already at the age of eight, he moved to the club called Newell's Old Boys, where he got the nickname "The Machine of '87".
- Due to his diagnosed growth disorder and the refusing attitude of the Argentine football clubs to take over treatment costs, the family moved to Spain. Here, Lionel Messi was discovered during a trial training of the FC Barcelona and immediately got signed. From 2000 to 2004 he played in the youth team of FC Barcelona until he became part of the starting lineup in the 2005/06 season. With the contract extension in 2005, Messi became a Spanish citizen and didn't play as a foreign football player any longer. In 2009, Messi was named European Footballer of the Year, and in the following season, he became a topscorer with 34 goals.
- In his 200th league football game for FC Barcelona in February 2012, he scored four of the five goals. Messi is considered to be a dreaded player: his high running speed, his excellent tribble skills and the ability to play with both the left and the right foot often irritate his opponents. In addition to the awards "Best Player of the Spanish League" for three years in a row, he became World Player of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and was honored as the "Best Player of the World Championship 2014" after the 2014 World Cup.
