Elvis Presley is one of the most recognizable names in music history. Known around the world as the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis transformed popular music with his voice, stage presence and unmistakable style. His influence reaches far beyond his biggest hits. He was a recording artist, movie star, television performer and cultural icon whose music continues to introduce new generations to rock and roll.

For Elvis fans visiting Central Florida, there is also a surprising amount of Elvis history to discover. Elvis performed in Orlando, filmed a movie in Central Florida, appeared at Florida entertainment destinations and continues to inspire tribute artists and festivals throughout the state.

And there is a way to get up close to the King without leaving Orlando.

At Madame Tussauds Orlando, you can meet the lifelike Elvis Presley wax figure in the Music Stars area. The figure captures Elvis in one of his most iconic eras, giving fans the chance to stand beside the King, take photos and celebrate a performer whose legacy continues to shape music and entertainment. Madame Tussauds Orlando currently features Elvis alongside artists from multiple generations, including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny and other music icons.

Whether you have been an Elvis fan for decades or are discovering his music for the first time, Orlando offers plenty of ways to celebrate the King.

Who Was Elvis Presley?

Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, and died August 16, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee.

His musical style drew from several traditions, including blues, gospel, country, rhythm and blues and rockabilly. That combination helped create the sound that would become synonymous with early rock and roll.

Elvis' rise was remarkably fast. After recording at Sun Studio in Memphis in the early 1950s, he signed with RCA and released his first RCA album, Elvis Presley, in 1956. The album became the first rock and roll album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart.

His career then expanded into Hollywood, television and some of the largest concert stages in the world.

Graceland's official Elvis history notes that he starred in 31 feature films and two theatrically released concert documentaries. He also appeared in television specials that became major moments in entertainment history, including the 1968 special commonly known as the Comeback Special and Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite.

Elvis Presley Tours and Concert Career

Elvis was not simply a recording artist. He was a touring performer who built his reputation by connecting with audiences in person.

His live career changed dramatically over time. The early years were defined by smaller venues and explosive rock and roll performances. After his return from military service, his career increasingly moved toward Hollywood, television and major concert appearances. Beginning in 1969, Elvis returned to regular live performance, including his celebrated Las Vegas engagements and extensive tours across the United States.

One of the most important Florida entries in Elvis' touring history came in February 1977.

When did Elvis Presley perform in Orlando?

Elvis Presley performed in Orlando on February 15, 1977, at the Orlando Sports Stadium.

The concert was part of a Florida run that began in Hollywood on February 12 and continued through West Palm Beach and St. Petersburg before reaching Orlando. Elvis performed at the Orlando Sports Stadium at 8:30 p.m. that night.

His Orlando set included songs such as "All Shook Up," "Don't Be Cruel," "My Way," "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." He also performed "Help Me," "Big Boss Man" and "School Day."

The concert is an important part of Orlando music history because it took place just six months before Elvis died.

The Orlando Sports Stadium itself is no longer standing. The arena opened in 1967, hosted numerous major concerts and was demolished in 1995.

Elvis in Florida: More Than One Orlando Concert

Elvis' connection to Florida extended beyond his Orlando concert.

Central Florida also played a role in his movie career. Follow That Dream, released in 1962, was filmed in parts of Citrus, Marion and Levy counties, including Inverness, Ocala, Inglis and Yankeetown. The film's Florida connection remains visible today, including Follow That Dream Parkway in Yankeetown.

Elvis also had a connection to Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, a historic Central Florida attraction that predates many of today's theme parks. Cypress Gardens became famous for its water ski shows and its connection to Hollywood. Elvis was among the celebrities associated with the attraction during its heyday.

Today, the former Cypress Gardens property is part of LEGOLAND Florida Resort, creating another fascinating connection between Central Florida's entertainment history and modern Orlando area tourism.

Elvis and Central Florida Movie History

For fans interested in Elvis movies, Central Florida offers a particularly interesting connection.

Follow That Dream starred Elvis as Toby Kwimper and was filmed in Florida in 1961. Unlike many Elvis movies that used Hollywood studio locations or destinations outside Florida, this film brought Elvis into Central Florida communities.

The filming locations included:

Why Elvis Presley Still Matters

Elvis Presley remains important because his influence cannot be confined to one decade or one musical style.

He helped bring rock and roll into mainstream American culture. He became a movie star. He changed the way performers approached television. He became a defining Las Vegas performer. He brought gospel, country, blues, rhythm and blues and rock and roll influences together in ways that reached audiences around the world.

Most importantly, Elvis remains an artist people continue to discover.

A teenager can hear "Jailhouse Rock" for the first time today and understand why it was exciting in 1957. A longtime fan can hear "Can't Help Falling in Love" and immediately be transported to another moment. A movie fan can discover Viva Las Vegas or Blue Hawaii. A gospel fan can explore How Great Thou Art or He Touched Me. A concert fan can watch footage from the 1970s and see the performer who could command an arena.

That broad appeal is what makes Elvis such a natural fit for an attraction dedicated to famous music, film and entertainment icons.
