• As the leader of the nationalist movement against British rule in India, Mahatma
Gandhi played a huge role in India’s freedom struggle. His use of non violent protest
to achieve social and political progress has been hugely influential
• Gandhi developed the Satyagraha which is the philosophy and practice of new nonviolent
ways to redress wrongs. This theory later influenced Martin Luther King and
Nelson Mandela
• On 30th January 1948, Gandhi was on his way to a prayer meeting when he was
assassinated in Delhi by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic
