• Mahathir bin Mohamad served as the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 until
2003, when he retired. He held the post for 22 years making him one of the longestserving
and most influential leaders in Asia
• The son of a schoolmaster, he was educated at Sultan Abdul Hamid College and the
University of Malaya in Singapore where he studied medicine
• First elected to parliament in 1964 as a member of the United Malays National
Organisation, he became a forceful advocate of policies to ensure Malaysia’s
economic success and modernisation
