• Vladimir Putin was elected President of Russia on 7th May 2012. He had previously served as President (2000 – 2008) and Prime Minister of Russia (1999 – 2000 and 2008 – 2012)

• Before venturing into politics, Putin worked his way up to Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB over the course of 16 years. He left to join Boris Yeltsin’s administration in 1996

• Putin is well known for his interest in sport, and is recognised as helping Russian city Sochi win their bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics
