- Born Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina on 13th May 1717 in Vienna, Austria. Maria Theresia was the only female ruler of the Habsburg empire. Many historians consider her the most capable, courageous and conscientious ruler of the entire dynasty.
- She initiated many reforms that strengthened Austria's military and the central authority of the monarchy and left a revitalised empire to her descendants. She promoted commerce, reordered the army and championed the development of agriculture.In the years 1743 to 1749 Maria Theresia had converted Schonbrunn Palace to her liking. It thus became the favorite palace and summer residence of the Archduchess.
- Maria Theresia had an impressive 16 children with her husband Francis Stephen of Lorraine. Among her royal offspring were Queen Marie Antoinette of France, Queen Maria Carolina of Naples and two Holy Roman Emperors, Joseph II and Leopold II.
