Facts about the 'The Little Corporal':

  • Born as Napoleon di Buonaparte on 15th August 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica, France. Napoleon decided on a military career when he was only a child, winning a scholarship to a military academy at the age of 14. He was one of the greatest military leaders in history and Emperor of France from 1804 to 1814.
  • By 1812 Napoleon had wiped out the last traces of the Holy Roman Empire and conquered most of Europe. But a disastrous battle against Russia spelled the beginning of the end for the self-crowned Emperor. Although Napoleon has also done positive reforms, such as the civil marriage or a legal reform - the Code Napoleon - which was introduced in the occupied countries and is still part in the German law, most people associate his name with never ending wars.
  • He is often referred to as 'The Little Corporal', because his height at death was 5 foot 2 inches. However, as the French foot was slightly longer than the English measurement at the time, his actual height was a respectable 5 foot 6 inches, the average height for men in those days.
