Media and Fake News (Ages 7–13)

With three hours’ worth of content pre and post an educational visit to Madame Tussaud's London, we are offering your students a set of unforgettable lessons that reinforce important aspects of the curriculum. 

Pupils will… stretch their English subject knowledge by delving into the complex world of the media and developing their critical literacy skills. They will explore the concept of the media and its impact on modern audiences. These lessons are created in collaboration with award winning educational specialist SHAPES for Schools

Objectives

  • To explore what we mean by the term ‘bias’ and how it can affect the way the news is presented
  • To write a news article in the role of a character, considering the concept of ‘bias’

  • To understand how fake news can affect people both in and outside the public eye

History (KS1/KS2)

Using the rich historical context of Madame Tussauds and its origins in the 18th Century, pupils will explore timelines during this historical period and order events as they occurred chronologically. Journey through the exciting history of London and Victorian Britain to help your students gain a rich understanding of local and national history.

History (KS3/KS4)

Examine sources in the unique context of the figures at Madame Tussauds to hone your students’ skills in evaluating and examining historical representations, together with categorising, selecting and prioritising with consideration of change and continuity, cause and consequence.

Art & Design (KS1/KS2)

Introduce pupils to drawing, with activities to help them draw to scale and record from their first-hand experience of figures in both 2D and 3D. Self-portrait and portrait are explored through observational studies as well as investigating the work of famous artists, applying different styles and interpretations to pupils’ own work.

Art & Design (KS3/KS4)

Students will have the opportunity to practise their observational study skills to understand ratio and proportion in portrait and self-portrait drawing. Topics extend into sculpture, and include activities to assist students in their planning and consideration of the materials involved in art and design. Activities also encourage students to critically analyse different styles of work.

Design Technology (KS3/KS4)

Go behind the scenes and explore the design and construction process behind wax figures and sculptures at Madame Tussauds. Students will also have opportunity to make and design their own products, collecting data about user needs to inform their designs and evaluating and adapting existing products.

Business Studies (KS4/KS5)

Use Madame Tussauds and the Merlin Group as a unique case study to investigate topics such as entrepreneurs; business culture and strategy; marketing; customer service; recruitment; and financial data.
