Facts about the actress Romy Schneider:
- She was born as Rosemarie Magdalena Albach on 23rd September 1938 in Vienna, Austria. She began her acting career at the age of 15 years. Together with her mother Magda Schneider they played in home movies. In the years 1955 to 1957 she succeeded in the role of Empress Elisabeth with the Sissi trilogy international breakthrough. Propelled to international stardom as the beloved ‘Sissi’ in the trilogy of films about Elisabeth of Austria, Romy moved to Paris in the 1960 to avoid typecasting. She starred in lots of French, Italian and English language films such La Piscine (1969), Boccaccio ’70 (1962) and the Oscar® nominated The Cardinal (1963).
- Despite enjoying a successful career as an actress Romy was less fortunate in her personal life. She was divorced twice, her son died tragically at the age of just 14 years old and less than year after this she died, aged 43 on 29th May 1982 in Paris, France.
- The French journalist Eugène Moineau created an award called the Prix Romy Schneider in her honour; a prestigious prize awarded to upcoming actresses in the French film industry.
